Biarum is a genus of approximately 20 species native to the Middle East, southern Europe and North Africa. They are small plants, the ‘flower’ or inflorescence being composed of a hood or spathe enclosing an upright spadix similar to members of the genus Arum.

This beautiful plant hails from the Canary Islands, and scrambles to about 5’ tall during its summer-growing period. In mid-summer it is hung
with enchanting orange bells, dying back in late summer to a tuberous root stock. Needs support. Can take light frost during its winter
dormancy.

The Dead Horse Arum.

The common name refers to its olfactory property causing E.A. Bowles to recommend viewing it through a telescope when in bloom. Handsome in leaf, the large hairy inflorescence has been described as “fiendish”. Not for the faint hearted. Corsica, Sardinia, the Balearics.

Only found on one small island off the coast of Italy, and somewhat resembling the more common S. peruviana, S. hughii is characterized by the much longer bracts, the wider leaves, and the purplish flush to the bracts. Our bulbs are the true species, grown from seed collected from the original site. Very rare.

The absolute best in this genus, and rarely seen or offered. The papery white flowers are held in an umbel atop a stem that is 24-30" (60-55cm) tall. Outstanding. FEW AVAILABLE

Umbels of deep purple flowers, 20 or more to a stem, each flower having a central cup similar to a Narcissus. The blooms appear in late summer before the leaves, which remain in growth throughout the winter. C. purpureum needs a dry summer rest, and does well in containers.
