Gethyllis is a large genus of bulbous plants from southern Africa. Most have delicate white to pale pink flowers that appear mid-summer. After pollination the ovary develops below the soil surface, then when ripe pushes itself up through the soil like small sausages. Some of the seed capsules are very fragrant and are used locally to flavor an alcoholic beverage.
